Yetama Villa

Concept:

A villa in Bali inspired by Japanese indigo and natural materials, emphasizing simplicity, texture, and connection to place. The design reinterprets the traditional Balinese open living approach through a contemporary lens, integrating interior and exterior spaces. Handcrafted furniture and artwork by local Balinese artisans is paired with a restrained palette of blues, woods, and woven textures to create a calm and cohesive living environment.

Project Overview

The Yetama Villa project involved completing the interior design of a villa in Bali, Indonesia, as part of a team of two designers in collaboration with the owner. The existing structure featured unfinished concrete surfaces and an open layout, which informed a material-driven design approach. To enhance natural light and strengthen the connection to the outdoors, large glass doors were introduced, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor relationship.

Inspired by the client’s appreciation for Japanese indigo and denim, the design centers on rich blue tones, natural materials, and layered textures. I was responsible for sourcing furniture and materials, selecting fabrics, styling, and contributing to the design of custom pieces, including a denim sofa and headboard. The existing concrete flooring was intentionally preserved to contrast with softer elements and handcrafted furniture sourced locally in Bali, resulting in a cohesive interior that balances comfort, durability, and a strong sense of place.

Design Goals

  • Establish a strong indoor–outdoor connection by introducing large glass openings and maximizing natural light

  • Balance raw concrete surfaces with warm materials and layered textures to create a comfortable, livable environment

  • Develop a cohesive palette inspired by Japanese indigo and denim through color, textiles, and finishes

  • Incorporate locally crafted furniture and natural materials to reflect the cultural context and enhance authenticity
